LEATHER 101...
Welcome to Leather 101 where you'll find helpful tips to navigate the leather world.
LESSON 1:
Weight Measurement - OZ vs. MM
The first great lesson to learn is finding out what "weight" or "thickness" is required for your product. Once you have the desired weight it will be in either one of two different measurement styles, Ounces (oz) or Millimeters (mm). continues However, the USA is really the only country still using Ounces (oz), where much of the world communicates in millimeters (mm). This lesson is to help you be a more skilled buyer.
The simple formula:
1 oz = .4 mm
Example:
If you are in need of 8 - 9 oz finished leather, but need to know in (mm)?
Solve:
Multiply your weight range in ounces by .4 to find the range in mm.
(.4 X 8) (.4 X 9)
Answer:
Range (mm) = 3.2 - 3.6
Leather Weight (Cheat Sheet):
Ounces vs. mm
2 - 2.5 = .8 - 1.0
2.5 - 3 = 1.0 - 1.2
3 - 3.5 = 1.2 - 1.4
3.5 - 4 = 1.4 - 1.6
4 - 4.5 = 1.6 - 1.8
4.5 - 5 = 1.8 - 2.0
5 - 5.5 = 2.0 - 2.2
5.5 - 6 = 2.2 - 2.4
6 - 6.5 = 2.4 - 2.6
6.5 - 7 = 2.6 - 2.8
7 - 7.5 = 2.8 - 3.0
7.5 - 8 = 3.0 - 3.2
8 - 8.5 = 3.2 - 3.4
8.5 - 9 = 3.4 - 3.6
9 - 9.5 = 3.6 - 3.8
9.5 - 10 = 3.8 - 4.0
10 - 10.5 = 4.0 - 4.2
10.5 - 11 = 4.2 - 4.4
11 - 11.5 = 4.4 - 4.6
11.5 - 12 = 4.6 - 4.8
12 - 12.5 = 4.8 - 5.0
12.5 - 13 = 5.0 - 5.2
13 - 13.5 = 5.2 - 5.4
13.5 - 14 = 5.4 - 5.6
14 - 14.5 = 5.6 - 5.8
14.5 - 15 = 5.8 - 6.0
